Overview

The New York State Internship Program welcomes applications from undergraduate and graduate students attending colleges and universities throughout New York State, as well as New York State residents studying elsewhere. Interns are placed within specific areas of New York State executive branch agencies or departments, where they gain valuable experience, interact with government leaders and policymakers, and contribute to meaningful projects.

Salary Information

Student intern compensation varies by agency and assignment. Hourly rates typically range from $16 to $27, with most positions paying between $18 to $20 per hour. Some internships are unpaid. Certain internships may also qualify for academic credit; students should contact their academic institution for details.

Program Portal

The Department of Civil Service hosts the Internship Portal. Interested students can use the internship portal to view job descriptions, explore and identify preferred opportunities, submit applications, and upload resumes. Internships can be filtered by degree concentration, occupational interest, location, and state agency. Students may apply to multiple opportunities with a single application through the portal. Each hosting office or agency reviews applications to identify and select candidates.
